News

The latest news from our recent club evenings and events or any other items of interest.

On Wednesday 18th November 45 members logged into Zoom to hear two experienced members comment on images submitted by a several members who wanted to know how they might fair in next years’ annual competition.

Members from all levels of experience submitted images covering a wide range of genres. Alan Stopher and James Gibson offered their opinion as to how each image could be improved and then invited the authors themselves and other members to join in the discussion.

Three of these feedback sessions are scheduled over the next few weeks and experience shows that, if members act on the suggestions made during the events, they avoid the same points being made by the judges during their evaluation of the images, thereby improving the authors’ scores.

The competition rules have changed significantly this year, and prior to the review of images, Alan Stopher gave a presentation summarising and explaining the changes. However, despite the clear explanation by Alan members were advised to read the updated 2021 rules document for themselves. Alan's presentation is also available for members to re-read at their leisure.

Tony Renshaw reported last week that he had been awarded Photographer of the Year by CATCH; an organisation based in Hull whose main aim is to support the process, energy, engineering and renewable industries in Yorkshire and Humber through the development and delivery of skills and qualifications programmes. Club member Lisa Buck announced the challenge via the club’s Facebook pages earlier this year. Tony’s winning image is shown below incorporating an image of the trophy (not actual size!). However, he regrets the hamper and its contents have been consumed.

Last night was the Interclub Colour Group competition, where we met with 9 other clubs for Round 2 of 4 via Zoom with nearly 100 attendees dialled in.

Our judge was Steve Womack CPAGB AFIAP LRPS from Wakefield, who had the unenviable job of judging 50 digital images.

The hosts were Leeds Co Op Photographic Society, who had chosen the Set Subject as Industrial Heritage. The Set Theme for this round was Sports Action and Photojournalism, with General images being shown last.

Steve commented on each image, with clear, concise and constructive comments and his appreciation on the variety of genres shown.

Congratulations to HPIC members Kevin Lloyd with image ‘Iranian Icon’ and Lisa Buck with the image ‘Spotlight’, which both scored 20 on the night.

We scored 92 points in this round, giving us a score of 182. This puts us in the overall lead of the competition, 4 points clear of our nearest rivals with two more rounds to go. As far as we know we've never opened up and held on to a lead in the first two rounds in the history of the competition. Here's hoping we can keep up this excellent form as we go into the final two rounds.

Round 3 and round 4 will follow in the Spring of 2021.

The transition to Tier 3 and then the sudden national lockdown meant that it was decided to cancel the planned physically-distanced night shoot in Huddersfield. Luckily we had been sent a link a few days before to a presentation of the Yorkshire Photographic Union 2020 accepted Projected Digital Images. This provided an interesting evening using the Zoom video conferencing app to which we have all become familiar. Around 230 images were shown by entry category with titles, photographer’s names and the clubs which they belonged to. James, our ‘projectionist’, paced the evening so that we were able to see all the images.

This kind of evening can be a passive experience but in this case James’ comments and the observations of a number of other members added a range of viewpoints and drew attention to particular merits and sometimes demerits of the images. We were particularly impressed by many of the Nature entries. A number of Scapes and Sports Action shots also caught the eye. A particularly pleasing aspect was the number of accomplished images by our own members, two of which are included here.
