News

The latest news from our recent club evenings and events or any other items of interest.

HPIC member Barbara Sheldrake gave us the antidote to digital imaging and computer post-processing this week by sharing her photographic passions with us. Her presentation covered the history of printing techniques from Daguerre onwards. She gave explanations of some methods which she had used such as Cyanotype, Salt printing and pinhole photography and showed examples of her own converted pin hole cameras. There were illustrations of Barbara’s own images as well as those from recent exponents of the craft techniques, such as Linda McCartney and Barbara Ess. Two examples of Barbara’s work shown here are a Cyanotype and a print toned with black tea sourced by Sue Gibson. Thanks Barbara for opening our eyes to these techniques. I can’t wait for the practical demonstration promised for February 2022.

The meeting commenced with the important matter of an extraordinary general meeting, in which a members' vote was held to decide on the future location when the club returns to having in-person meetings. This followed the opportunity for members to visit the new venue on a previous night in the club's programme.

A large proportion of the membership voted and the motion to move to a new venue was carried by a significant majority with a few abstentions and very few objections. As and when meetings begin the club will move from the old location of Kirkheaton Conservation Club to Kirkheaton Parish Church's Parish Centre. Comments on the new venue from members were largely positive reflecting the better disabled access, greater and more practical space and improved lighting.

Workshop

The rest of the meeting was given over to preparation for the upcoming In-Club Competition (ICC). This will pit teams of members against one another across a number of subjects, taken from the upcoming season 2021/22 season of the Interclub Competition that HPIC competes in every year (with some success). Members were assigned to breakout rooms based on their teams and worked with their captains and fellow team members to select the 5 images they will be putting forward on October 27th when judging and scoring will take place. Stay tuned for details on the eventual winners.

As dictated by president the event last on Wednesday was scheduled as

the “President’s Evening”. Again, following tradition the President (Tony

Renshaw) had set the theme for the digital presentation of images on the

night, asking members to submit up to two images on the theme of

“Having Fun”.

More than 20 members obliged by uploading some 28 images for review

by the president, who had the pleasant but difficult task of choosing his

favourites from the wide range of photographic styles and subject matter.

In making his choice, adherence to the brief and technical content were

given equal weight, and the following images were selected:

But, really on this occasion there were no winners or losers. Each author

told the audience, of more than 30 members, of the stories behind their

image which turned out to be both revealing and entertaining.

The chair thanked all those who submitted images and those who had

logged on to witness the event.
